Advent Dulcimer Devotions return…

by Steve Eulberg

Imagine this:  A weekly email playing gentle music of instrumental ensembles featuring dulcimers, with a message of preparation that is serene, clear-sighted and hope-filled–an anti-dote to the crazed, blurry-eyed busyness of Christmas preparations (that began in some locations back in October.)

Advent is the 4-week season in the Christian tradition that marks the beginning of a new year in the life of the “called-out” people of God known as the church.  While we gather and prepare to celebrate the birth of a savior, we also gather and prepare for the return of the savior in the days when the light from the sun is shortest each day.  (In the northern hemisphere, that is.)

This is free and available to you and anyone with whom you share this

Think of it:  Sweet Music of dulcimers arriving, once a week, to help your calm and centering prayer or practice be refreshed and renewed so you can return to your daily rhythms with hope and joy.  (That sounds like a tall order, but it is what HE experiences when playing and sharing the tunes of Advent (the church season before Christmas.)

Tips for Jam Survival

by Steve Eulberg

The Summer Festival season is fast approaching (can you feel the buzz of excitement in the air?)  Many of us set aside our winter rhythms and venture out to play music with others in new settings: out of doors, at picnics and cookouts, at public parks, at the beach, at festivals, at week-long learning opportunities.

Some of us are also a little anxious about these meetings because we’re not quite certain how we will survive when jamming with other people whom we don’t know!

So here is your opportunity to help!  Send us your best JAM SURVIVAL tips or stories and we’ll publish them on this blog, and/or use them in lessons on DulcimerCrossing.com

Do you have little things you do that help you enjoy a jam?  Learn as much as you can about a new tune?  What are the best tools and tricks that you know of?

You can write me here in the comments or send them to:  steve@owlmountainmusic.com.

Or you can make a video of your tip and upload it to youtube or vimeo and send us the link.

Or you can make an audio recording and upload it to soundcloud and send us the link.

The Goal of the project is to provide resources for dulcimer players who wish to improve their performing skills and experience the joy of shared creative musical experiences in ensembles large and small.

The Right Hand Fingerstyle Technique of David Massengill

by Steve Eulberg

At the Gebhard Woods Festival I was given a tutorial by David Massengill about his right hand finger-style technique for playing mountain dulcimer.  Take a look!

There are many different styles of playing our beloved instruments and being able to witness the variety always inspires my creativity!
