Over the past few years we’ve played Beethoven, Bach, Mouret and Vivaldi and sampled a taste of the Chinese (yang qin) flavor of the dulcimer.
For 2013 our Conductor (Steve) would like us to explore (3) three other avenues:
Simple Gifts
An American Shaker community tune by Elder Joseph Brackett, this accessible, 4-part arrangement is for (2) Mountain Dulcimers in DGd tuning and (2) Hammered Dulcimers. It is arranged as a concise quartet which highlights the differing voices of the mountain and hammered dulcimers. Performed in the key of G.
The skills it teaches and reinforces are: dynamics, tremolo technique and counting.

Herzlich Tut Verlangen (“O Sacred Head, Now Wounded”)
is a 4-part transcription of Bach’s (arrangement of Hans Leo Hassler’s adaptation of the German Folk Tune) tune from his St. Matthew’s Passion. This piece is a masterful example of Bach’s Chorale Style and in this arrangement parts are written for (4) hammered and (4) standard mountain dulcimers (in various tunings), as well as a mixed quartet of mountain dulcimers (Ginger/Standard/Baritone/Bass). Performed in the key of D.
The skills it teaches and reinforces are: the challenges of playing chromatic music on diatonic instruments, independently moving rhythmic parts.

The Greek-themed “Never on Sunday”
was written for the 1960 movie of the same name by Manos Hajidakis. In this arrangement, (2) mountain dulcimer parts in DAd tuning and (2) hammered dulcimer parts take turns playing melody and back-up, imitating the Greek version of the Hammered Dulcimer (Sandouri) while the Mountain Dulcimers imitate the bouzouki. This is performed in the key of D.
The skills it teaches and reinforces are: staccato articulation, slides and tremolo.
