Description
Written for Si Kahn‘s 2014 Birthday (at his invitation–and request) to support the headwaters of the world’s largest salmon-spawning grounds. Musicians United to Protect Bristol Bay are organized to bring public awareness to the plans of mining companies who seek to despoil the arctic wilderness with no provision for the (literal) downstream consequences.
Pebble Mine, Pebble Mine
I’m gonna make that Pebble Mine
Walkin’ in the park, get a pebble in my shoe
Pull out the pebble, say, “You bother me, too!”
Slip it in my pocket and soon I find
I’m gonna make that Pebble Mine
Swimming upstream is all I’ve known
Flip my fins to carry my home
Follow this trail so life goes on
When I get there, then I can spawn.
Pebble Mine, Pebble Mine
See? Over there? That Pebble is Mine!
Looking for a place to dump their sludge
the pin-striped suits say, “we won’t budge.”
tell the black-robed judge, “the people don’t care
if we dump poison in the river over there…”
Pebble Mine, Pebble Mine
The people don’t care, the Pebbles are MINE!
Well money talks loud and fast, its true
But here is one thing that money can’t do:
Open my eyes so I can name
The pebble in my pocket and the stream are the same.
People Mine, Pebble Mine
All the pebbles in the world are mine.
